Those Lady Gaga- and Willow Smith-singing modern Chipmunks are entertaining (if just a bit freaky), but I’ll always prefer the low-fi version. In addition to following their zany hijinks on Saturday Morning Cartoons with my little brother, the Chipmunks’ Christmas album (on tape!) was played on repeat in our family van while we accompanied my mom on her holiday errands, and has been utterly seared into my brain.
