We love our friends. We love when our friends meet the man/woman of their dreams, that’s for certain.
And we really, really love it when they host their nuptials at a resort location.
Not that we enjoy weddings at a family homestead any less, but traveling (and paying) to celebrate the union of good friends is–not surprisingly–more fun with some R&R built in for moi.
Thanks to a really brilliant couple who planned their spring wedding in Mexico, I was treated to my first beach vacation last year. Anyone who knows of the lack of melanin in my skin, knows that I do better bundled up at a Swiss chalet than laid out to burn to a crisp at Mexican beach. But coming from last year’s freezing spring in New York, I was game for some crisping.
Unlike the collegiate revelers packing into motels in nearby Cancun, we were luxuriating at a well-appointed resort. With no less booze, to be sure.
The Beloved Hotel (previously La Amada) in Playa Mujeres faces the Caribbean and is accessible on a flight just a little longer than one to Miami. A shuttle can meet you at the airport, and if waiting for more of your party to arrive, fear not- there’s a street-side bar to keep you occupied outside the terminal.
The hotel grounds are expansive, including at least three communal swimming pools, private ones with certain suites, and a private beach. There are yoga classes, a gym and spa, multiple bars and dining rooms, and– oh yeah– sun.

Let’s be honest: While I’m thankful for this year’s mild Mid Atlantic winter, I wouldn’t mind a reason to run away to Mexico.
