Obsessed with The Outnet

Three Steps to Great Eyes

While in NYC a few weeks back, Mary and I took a break from staring at our computer screens and went on a “research” trip to Caravan Stylist Studio {wow, really, this is what we get to do for work, it’s kind of amazing}. Caravan Stylist Studio is the brainchild of Claudine DeSola and is a super cool studio located in the Carlton Hotel that pairs starlets and tastemakers with new fashion designers and also provides hair-styling, makeup, and nail design on top of it all.

Mary and I fell in love with the super chic studio and while I was dying to get gradient nails, Mary was looking for a great “going out” eye for the evening. We both walked away with exactly what we were looking for thanks to Claudine and superstar beauty expert Valerie Star.

New York Gallery Beat

This week’s New York Gallery Beat is an exciting collection of fashion and crazy modernism. You’ll see a lot of new and unique visions from these artists- reinterpreting fashion styles, jewelry pieces, and Ancient Greek statues. I hope I’ve piqued your interest, because these exhibits are definitely worth your attention.

Punk: Chaos to Couture

The whole city (and the fashion elite) are talking about this exciting new exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Punk: Chaos to Couture, organized by the Met’s Costume Institute, examines how the fashion style evolved over the last 40 years. From its birth as a subculture to its modern-day use in high fashion, punk has really come a long way.

The exhibit includes over 100 punk designs for both men and women. Organized into seven galleries, each gallery focuses on one iconic person and how they influenced the punk fashion and cultural scene.

Punk has admittedly gotten bad reviews. Art critics have labeled it unorganized, cheesy, and an exhibit that makes little inroads into the true social commentary punk fashion was.

They may be right. But love it or hate it, it’s still an important exhibit everybody is talking about. And for that reason alone it’s absolutely worth seeing.

Jeff Koons

This is Koons’ first solo exhibit at the Gagosian. The highly-acclaimed artist and his avant garde pieces have been around since the ‘80s, but if you’ve never seen them then take the time to do so now.

The exhibit is a sampling from several recent collections by Koons. The work can be a little crazy, but it’s all the more enjoyable as a result. It’s quirky and it makes you laugh, and I love the odd things Koons puts together.

A mix of both sculpture and painting, Koons takes inspiration from “children’s art, comic-book characters, and figures from classical antiquity”(Gagosian press release). I guess that explains the mishmashes.

This stuff is pretty out-there, and I’m not sure how else to describe it. Go see it yourself and you’ll understand what I mean. You may be scratching your head, but you’ll still enjoy it.

Wear It or Not: Recent Jewelry Acquisitions

We all love jewelry, right? As a fashion statement or an art form, looking at jewelry never gets old.

In this new exhibit at the Museum of Arts and Design, you can see nearly 130 unique pieces from around the world. All were collected within the last five years.

What I love about this exhibit is the variety of jewelry and its exploration of jewelry-making techniques. Not only can you see gorgeous, creative pieces, but you can also learn how some of them were made. The exploration of digital techniques is the coolest, showing you how jewelry can now be designed on your computer.

Not all the jewelry is ready-to-wear. Some of it is much more conceptual- like a bochio shaped in the form of its artist (titled Self Portrait). This is a great way to see how jewelry can take on new meaning.

Get the Look: The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby is one of the most anticipated movies of the summer. And why not? With a director like Baz Luhrmann, a soundtrack from Jay-Z and Leo to brighten up the screen, it should be on the top of everyone’s list. Luhrmann has taken Gatsby to a new whimsical level in this latest adaptation of the famed book and there was no going overboard with set design and costuming. Every character looks particular put together, but with his or her own distinct style – it just has you DYING to be transported back in time to live in the age of the flapper. Here are a a few ways to get that 20′s look while still living in 2013.

Wildcraft Pizza Welcome to Culver City!

Downtown Culver City is the place to be. Residents like myself have said this for years, and now with tons of new restaurants popping up, the arrival of the Expo Line, and apartment rents rising, the fact cannot be denied. It is just a matter of keeping up with everything happening in the area so you don’t miss out on the newest arrivals.

It took more than a month to actually walk over to a new kid on the Culver City block, Wildcraft Sourdough Pizza but with it’s instant popularity just walking in to grab dinner wasn’t an easy proposition. With very little good pizza in Los Angeles at all (I’m from Chicago, the bar has been set very high) I hoped Wildcraft could at least meet basic expectations. From the number of people inside at all times of the day I assumed it was more than just the novelty of a new restaurant which kept business booming.

I’m pleased to report our meal was terrific – it did deliver and sourdough pizza crust fans will be in heaven. Offering just as many blanco pizza options as ones with red sauce, this isn’t a run of the mill pizzeria, but doesn’t get too big for its britches either. Sure, there are dishes with truffles on the menu, but you can also get a classic margherita as well. The wines and beers have been thoughtfully selected but avoid pretentious and just plain pair well with the pizza.

Surprisingly, the highlight of the meal was the appetizer – lamb meatballs with a sauce which included baked beans and pomegranate seeds. Sounds strange, right? Well, from odd ingredients comes great culinary success. The woman seated one table over from us would agree, seeing as she was visiting Wildcraft for her third time that week. Repeat customers like this CC local explains the lack of seats, so keep in mind the restaurant opens daily at noon and they don’t take reservations which makes an afternoon snack at Wildcraft a great option.

Oh, By The Way: Don’t just take my word for confirmation of quality at Wildraft, the Zagat blog just named their Fried Olives appetizer one of the “8 New Guilty Pleasures to Try Around Los Angeles”.

Let’s Be Honest: As cozy at this little eatery is, the place gets H-O-T inside with dozens of hot bodies sharing a space with dozens of hot pizzas. Opt for a seat outside – heat lamp optional.

Accessorize: A bright skirt with a casual tee is the perfect outfit for this neighborhood haunt.

Blazers might be my favorite fashion items ever. They can completely change an outfit in an instant – can take you from day to night, or night to day – and they are great this time of year when its still a bit chilly in the evenings. I am however, SO over my black blazers. I have too many of them and they are just boring me to death. So, I went on the search to find some fun colored blazers to brighten up my wardrobe.

Girls Night Book Club Party

I really enjoy reading and I try to take some time each night before bed to read a chapter or two to unwind from the day. The theme we’ve been going with in my book club is a book that is being turned into a movie. The last book we read was Life of Pi and then this past time we read The Great Gatsby – definitely looking forward to seeing the movie! When hosting the big night, it’s important to have all the prep work done ahead of time so that you can relax and enjoy the party and not be running around like a crazy lady during the event. I like to buy a few items I can just put out in bowls and then also make a few items. Here’s everything that I served…

Crudité from the Pacific Palisades Farmers Market: Green Cauliflower, Purple Cauliflower, Heirloom Carrots, Rainbow Radishes, Cucumber, Snap Peas
